3 Tips on How to Create Epic Content on a Boring Topic
24th February 2015Uh oh – your boss or clients want you to create interesting content out of the boring topic. Double-uh-oh – you create a niche blog on… (drumroll, please…) highway construction?? “How on earth can I create an epic content on such boring topic?!” you wail.
It’s always challenging to create a content – a great content, that is – on “boring subjects”. But you might be interested to know that the so-called “boring stuffs” are, well, boring, because you tell your mind that it’s boring.
Yes, it’s all in your mindset.
I’m a big believer of “you are what you believe” concept. Everything comes out from your mind – if you think it’s difficult, then it IS difficult to you. If you think that it’s possible, then things will be possible to you, somehow.
This is also true in creating great content. If the content you are creating is in a boring subject, topic or industry, you need to find a reason for you NOT to think that those are “boring.”
I’m not an avid writer, but I know I can influence people via storytelling. I can make tough topic easier to discern. I can also make a boring topic be more interesting (fingers crossed!)
How? Well, in my 7 years of blogging, I learn that there always something interesting about a particular topic. Always think that there is no topic that is too boring to cover and work hard in finding that interesting take about the topic.
So, again, it’s all about mindset.
Want some practical tips?
If you are a blogger or writer who is still struggling with getting things to work to the direction you intended, I do have these 5 practical tips to help you generate that spark in your content – even though you are creating content for boring topics.
1. Research about your topic
The more you learn, the more you find that a particular topic is interesting. Years ago I wrote about highway construction in England. I talked about the material, the construction company that has won the tender to build the highway, and so on.
It’s a boring subject at best (well, at least to me…) but I managed to create something compelling. How? You can start by researching about your topic. As you learn more, you’ll find interesting things to be mentioned in your content.
2. Fun facts work!
Want to change virtually all boring topics into epic content? Create fun facts.
One of the reasons BuzzFeed is so popular is the fact that the talented writers know how to discover unpopular topics, find facts about them and present them in a top 10 list video.
The idea is to find what people may considered as interesting from your boring topic.
For example, if you are creating content on highway constructions, you might want to find fun facts like “Why the interstate route marker is a red, white and blue shield?” or interesting-but-relevant topic like “5 most scenic highways in the world”
3. Tell stories
Storytelling works – for kids and adults alike.
Just like what Albert Einstein said a long time ago: “If you can’t explain it to a six-year-old, you don’t understand it.”
Stories can help people to get the gist from your content, even on a “boring” topic. Through images, infographics, videos, slides, anecdotes, opinions, arguments, rants, raves, etc. – you can help content consumers to gain interest easily in, as well as understanding on a particular topic.
You are creating consumable content for the general public – it shouldn’t not look – and read – like a thesis. Got it?
Bonus tip: Stop using jargons. Please.
Banish your jargons – unless you write your content for a targeted group of audience in a particular niche. Jargons might make you look smart and show (off) your expertise, but they often don’t add value for your content consumers.
Just use your jargons as necessary. Don’t show off, and don’t confuse. ‘Nuff said.
Takeaway
So, there you go – some cool tips on how to write an epic content on a boring topic.
Remember, every time you get to create content on challenging topic like “art restoration” for example, you need to do it in such a way that the general public can understand easily.
As always, aim to solve your content consumers’ problem: Be sure your content are there when they need to learn about something – and be the expert who has the knowledge about that particular topic.
Final words: In content creation and marketing – for both popular and unpopular topics – everything starts with your content, not SEO. Optimize for content consumers first, and then the search engines – not the other way around.
